Evangelho segundo S. Mateus 17,10-13.
Ao descerem do monte, os discípulos fizeram a Jesus esta pergunta: «Então, porque é que os doutores da Lei dizem que Elias há-de vir primeiro?»
Ele respondeu: «Sim, Elias há-de vir e restabelecerá todas as coisas.
Eu, porém, digo vos: Elias já veio, e não o reconheceram; trataram-no como quiseram. Também assim hão de fazer sofrer o Filho do Homem.»
Então, os discípulos compreenderam que se referia a João Baptista.

قالَ الربُّ يَسوعُ (لليهود): لَوْ كُنْتُ أَنَا أَشْهَدُ لِنَفْسِي لَمَا كَانَتْ شَهَادَتِي مَقْبُولَة
ولكِنَّ آخَرَ يَشْهَدُ لِي، وأَنَا أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الشَّهَادَةَ الَّتِي يَشْهَدُهَا لِي صَادِقَة
أَنْتُم أَرْسَلْتُم إِلى يُوحَنَّا فَشَهِدَ لِلحَق
وأَنَا لا أَسْتَمِدُّ الشَّهَادَةَ مِنْ إِنْسَان، ولكِنْ مِنْ أَجْلِ خَلاصِكُم أَقُولُ هذَا
كَانَ يُوحَنَّا السِّرَاجَ المُوقَدَ السَّاطِع، وأَنْتُم شِئْتُم أَنْ تَبْتَهِجُوا بِنُورِهِ سَاعَة
أَمَّا أَنَا فَلِي شَهَادَةٌ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ شَهَادَةِ يُوحَنَّا: أَلأَعْمَالُ الَّتِي أَعْطَانِي الآبُ أَنْ أُتَمِّمَهَا، تِلْكَ الأَعْمَالُ نَفْسُهَا الَّتِي أَعْمَلُهَا، تَشْهَدُ أَنَّ الآبَ أَرْسَلَنِي
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 17:10-13.
Then the disciples asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
