English <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

1) His birth :<\/span>
\nBrother Estephan Nehme was born in Lehfed, on March 8th, 1889. His parents, Estephan Bou Haykal Nehme and Christina Badawi Hanna Khaled were very decent. He was baptized on March 15th, 1889, at Our Lady Church of Lehfed, by Father Gerges Fadel. He was given the name of Youssef.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2) His life :<\/strong><\/span>
\nYoussef grew up in the warmth of his parents. He was the youngest among three boys and two girls. He was pampered by everyone and he brought joy, and he was the angel of the family. He used to run away from noise and prefer loneliness and quiet. When he wanted to pray, he went to a peaceful place where he could meditate and listen to God. He learnt the basics reading and writing as well as Christian teachings principles with the children of the village under the trees near the Church of Saint Estephan. Since his childhood, Youssef loved God and holy Mother Mary. When Her name was mentioned, his heart jumped joyfully especially when he recited the rosary slowly, meditating each word and sentence. He prayed with deep faith and piety. He used to remind his family to start the traditional evening prayer that fermented the members and turn the Christians houses into a paradise corner.
\nYoussef was not sociable and he was not interested in parties, even among family. On the contrary, he preferred to stay at home and pray late at night. Afterwards, he went to bed and repeated: \u201cGod can see me, God can see me. Jesus, Mary and Saint Joseph, help me at the moment of death.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

3) His integration to the Lebanese Maronite Order :<\/strong><\/span>
\nIn 1905, when he was 16 year old, Youssef left his parental house heading to the Monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justine in Kfifane in order to become monk. Eight days later, he wore the novices\u2019 cassock and took the name of \u201cEstephanos\u201d.
\nOn August 23rd, 1907, the Superior of the Convent, Father Youassaf Saker from Kfoun, blessed the simple vows of Brother Estephan who wore the novices\u2019 cassock.
\nAfterwards, B. Estephan spent a 31 year monastic life: twelve years at the Monastery of Our Lady in Mayfouk, ten years at the Monastery of Notre Dame des Secours in Jbeil, three years at the Monastery of Saint Antonios in Houb and around seven months at the Monastery of Kfifane. He also lived in Saint Chalita Monastery in Kettara and the Monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya.
\nOn April 13th, 1924, he pronounced his solemn vows at the Monastery of Saint Antonios in Houb, blessed by Father Youssef Mattar from Lehfed, at Saint Antonios Monastery in Houb.
\nBrother Estephan was a \u201cworker monk\u201d. He worked in the fields and gardens of the monastery. He was responsible for the field. He learnt as well carpentry when he was in Mayfouk. Furthermore, he was good in construction and he was robust and sturdy. Thus, this tough monk spent his life in the fields of the Order.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4) His death :<\/strong><\/span>
\nBrother Estephan has demarcated the borders of the Order\u2019s land when the latter bought it. He was conveyed to reveal the marks after a long conflict. When he achieved his mission and resolved the problem due to his perspicacity, his cleverness as well as his good intention, he went back to the Monastery of Kfifane. He was extremely tired and ill.
\nIn the evening, when he was sitting with the other monks, Brother Charbel Nehmeh, before going to sleep, asked him if he wanted to get his jar filled with water, and he answered: \u201cDo whatever you want\u201d. When B. Charbel was heading towards the room of the said monk to bring the jar, B. Antonios Ramy followed him asking: \u201cWhere is water?\u201d When he followed him, they found out that B. Estephan passed away. <\/strong><\/p>\n

1-Sa naissance :<\/span>
\nIl est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Lehfed, le 8 mars 1889. Son p\u00e8re, Estephan Bou Haykal Nehmeh et sa m\u00e8re, Christina El Badawi Khaled, \u00e9taient tous les deux r\u00e9put\u00e9s pour leurs bonnes m\u0153urs. 2- Sa vie :<\/strong><\/span>
\nSous le regard bienveillant de ses parents, Youssef a grandi. Il \u00e9tait le benjamin d\u2019une famille compos\u00e9e de trois fils et de deux filles. Il \u00e9tait l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment choy\u00e9 et l\u2019ange gardien du foyer.
\nIl fuyait le tumulte et affectionnait l\u2019isolement. Au cours de sa jeunesse, s\u2019il voulait prier, il s\u2019\u00e9loignait de la maison afin de ne pas entendre quoi que ce f\u00fbt qui perturb\u00e2t sa pri\u00e8re et sa m\u00e9ditation.
\nIl a appris les rudiments de la lecture, de l\u2019\u00e9criture et du cat\u00e9chisme avec les enfants du village, sous les arbres avoisinant la belle \u00e9glise d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 saint Etienne, \u00e0\u00a0 Lehfed.
\nD\u00e8s sa naissance, Youssef aima Dieu et sa sainte M\u00e8re, la Vierge. S\u2019il venait \u00e0 prononcer le nom de cette derni\u00e8re, son c\u0153ur se remplissait de joie, surtout lorsqu\u2019il priait le chapelet. Il en r\u00e9citait les dizaines, lentement, m\u00e9ditant le sens de chacune.
\nIl \u00e9tait recueilli dans sa pri\u00e8re. Il avait aussi l\u2019habitude de rappeler aux membres de sa famille leur devoir de prier le soir. Cette pri\u00e8re, toute famille libanaise avait l\u2019habitude de la faire. Parmi ses effets : mener les membres de la famille \u00e0 la maturit\u00e9 spirituelle et faire de leurs foyers un coin de paradis c\u00e9leste.
\nYoussef n\u2019aimait ni les assembl\u00e9es ni les veill\u00e9es, m\u00eame chez les parents proches. Il pr\u00e9f\u00e9rait rester \u00e0 domicile et prier longuement, puis dormir en murmurant : \u00ab Dieu me voit, Dieu me voit. O J\u00e9sus, \u00f4 Marie, \u00f4 saint Joseph, assistez-moi, surtout \u00e0 l\u2019heure de ma mort. \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n

3-Son int\u00e9gration de l\u2019ordre maronite libanais :<\/strong><\/span>
\nEn 1905, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 16 ans, Youssef quitta le domicile paternel pour s\u2019engager dans la vie monastique au couvent des saints Cyprien et Justine, \u00e0 Kfifane. Il fut admis parmi les novices et, huit jours plus tard, il portait leur habit et prenait le nom de St\u00e9phane.
\nLe 23 ao\u00fbt 1907, le fr\u00e8re Estephan pronon\u00e7a ses v\u0153ux monastiques et porta le froc, sous la direction du P\u00e8re sup\u00e9rieur, Youwassaf Sakr, de Kfoun.
\nApr\u00e8s cela, le fr\u00e8re Estephan v\u00e9cut trente ans de vie religieuse. Il en a pass\u00e9 presque douze au monast\u00e8re Notre-Dame de Mayfouq, dix autres dans celui de Notre-Dame du secours \u00e0 Jbeil, trois \u00e0 saint Antoine de Houb et presque six ou sept mois au couvent de Kfifane, o\u00f9 il mourut. Il a aussi pass\u00e9 quelque temps aux couvents de saint Challita \u00e0 Kattara, puis saint Maron, \u00e0 Annaya.
\nLe 13 avril 1924, il pronon\u00e7a ses v\u0153ux solennels sous la direction du P\u00e8re Youssef Matar de Lehfed, au couvent saint Antoine, \u00e0 Houb.
\nLe fr\u00e8re Estephan a v\u00e9cu une vie de fr\u00e8re ouvrier. Il travaillait dans les jardins des monast\u00e8res. Il \u00e9tait \u00ab chef de champ \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019il g\u00e9rait les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s du monast\u00e8re.
\nIl avait \u00e9galement appris l\u2019art de la menuiserie \u00e0 Mayfouq et exer\u00e7ait le m\u00e9tier.
\nDe plus, il \u00e9tait bon ma\u00e7on et \u00e9tait r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour sa forte carrure et sa robustesse.
\nMais l\u2019on peut dire que ce moine a pass\u00e9 les ann\u00e9es de sa vie \u00e0 cultiver les jardins des monast\u00e8res o\u00f9 il r\u00e9sidait.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4-Sa mort :<\/strong><\/span>
\nLe fr\u00e8re Estephan marquait tr\u00e8s bien les limites des terrains gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des traces qu\u2019il posait et qu\u2019il r\u00e9v\u00e9lait au monast\u00e8re. Apr\u00e8s avoir ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 cette t\u00e2che au couvent Notre-Dame de Mayfouq et r\u00e9sout maints probl\u00e8mes gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son intelligence percutante, sa bont\u00e9 et sa conscience vive, il est retourn\u00e9 au couvent de Kfifane. Mais sa sant\u00e9 \u00e9tait \u00e9branl\u00e9e et une fatigue profonde marquait sa personne.
\nUn soir, alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait assis avec les moines, le fr\u00e8re Charbel Nehmeh lui demanda s\u2019il voulait qu\u2019il lui remplisse la cruche avant qu\u2019il ne dorme. Il lui a r\u00e9pondu : \u00ab Fais comme tu veux. \u00bb Le fr\u00e8re Charbel s\u2019est dirig\u00e9 vers la cellule du fr\u00e8re Estephan afin de remplir la cruche. C\u2019est alors que le fr\u00e8re Antoine el Rami le suivit en criant : \u00ab O\u00f9\u00a0 est l\u2019eau ? O\u00f9 est la cruche ? \u00bb Et il lui demanda de le suivre.
